Changement de machine à coudre

J'ai récemment décidé de changer de machine à coudre. J'ai eu beaucoup de plaisir avec ma petite Bernette Chicago 7 qui coud et brode mais maintenant que j'ai une machine à broder je ne me servais plus d'elle que pour coudre et  souvent je pestais car elle manque de puissance sur les tissus lourds.

I recently decided to change my sewing machine. I have had a lot of fun with my Bernette Chicago 7   which does both sewing an embroidery but as I now have a proper embroidery machine, I am using the Bernette only for sewing. And I am often moaning because of its lack of power especially on heavy fabrics.

Donc après réflexion (jamais très longue ) et examen de mon compte en banque (encore plus court vu qu'il n'y a pas grand chose à voir) et des heures sur internet à regarder les modèles, je m'étais décidée pour une Pfaff Expression 3.5 à cause du système d'entrainement permettant un passage aisé des tissus épais, et son grand débattement à droite. Les Bernina me tentaient bien mais elles coûtent un bras et c'est pire  depuis que le franc suisse a repris sa liberté par rapport à l'euro.

So after a bit of thinking, not too long , and a quick look at my bank account - even shorter, not too much to watch on it! - and hours spent on internet looking for the best machine, I finally chose a Pfaff Expression 3.5 , mostly because of the special walking foot system and the room on the right. I was also very tempted by the Berninas but they cost an arm and a leg, and it is even worse since the Swiss franc is no more linked to the Euro.

Je suis allée voir le revendeur Pfaff à Saint Brieuc, qui avait la machine en stock. Là j'ai été vraiment très bien accueillie par une dame charmante qui m'a tout expliqué, et au final j'ai commandé la Elna Excellence 680 qui correspondait bien à ce que je voulais. Elle n'était pas en stock mais je suis revenue la chercher le lendemain. Et j'ai pu la payer en trois fois!

I went  to the Pfaff shop in Saint Brieuc to see the machine. I was very well received by a very nice lady who listened to me and found me exactly what I needed : a Elna Excellence 680. she didn't have it in stock but it was ready to pick up the following day. And I could pay it over threee months!

Evidemment, acheter en magasin revient un petit peu plus cher que sur Internet mais à mon avis les deux ne se comparent pas. Sur internet la machine est livrée telle quelle et on doit se débrouiller. A Saint Brieuc , j'ai eu près de deux heures d'explications et de démonstration si bien que j'ai pu m'amuser avec mon nouveau jouet le soir même sans devoir plonger dans le mode d'emploi.

Of course buying in a shop is a bit more expensive than doing it online but I don't think the two  things are comparable. If one buys on internet, one gets the machine as it is without any explaination. At St Brieuc shop, I have been offered two hours of training so I have been able to start  playing with my new toy straight away!

Et puis, si les magasins ferment faute de clients, qui entretiendra les machines ???
And if all the sewing machine shops are closing, who will service them?

Mes deux machines l'une à côté de l'autre (pas pour longtemps, je mets la Bernette en vente dès qu'elle est révisée). L'Elna est plus grosse et plus lourde, donc plus stable aussi.

My two machines alongside each other (not for long as I put the Bernette for sale as soon as it has been serviced). The Elna is bigger and heavier and therefore more stable.

pied à boutonnière, le truc en métal à gauche sert à maintenir les tissus et ça marche bien !

foot for button holes, the metallic part is holding the  fabric tight and it works well!

L'écran est très facile à comprendre, et j'ai bien aimé les 4 touches d'accès direct aux principaux points. par contre je doute qu'un jour j'utiliserai l'alphabet cyrillique !

The screen is very easy to use, and I like the 4 buttons which give  access to the 4 main stitches. But I doubt I will use the cyrillic alphabet much!

La machine a une grande table d'extension facile à mettre et à enlever, réglable en hauteur.

There is also a big extension table easy to put on and to remove, with 4 height adjustable feet.

Il y a aussi une genouillère, qui permet de remonter le pied de biche sans les mains, pratique pour faire du quilting ou des gros trucs, je n'ai pas encore essayé. 

I haven't tried the electronic knee-lift yet, but I presume it very handy for quilting.

En fait, il y a deux choses que j'ai adoré :

There is two details I really enjoyed:

les finitions sont absolument nickel, plus de fils qui traînent partout. Plus de canette qui se bloque à cause des fils qui s'entortillent,

The automatic thread snip: the finishing is perfect with no more broken threads everywhere. And no more bobin blocage because of kinking threads

et le pied transporteur.

and the strong walking foot.

Grâce à lui j'ai pu coudre des rideaux doublés d'occultant pour la chambre de mon fils.

 Le tissu attendait depuis tellement longtemps que je ne me souvenais plus à quoi il ressemblait !

Thanks to it, I have finally been able to make my son's curtains, the fabric has been bought so long ago, I didn't even remember what it looked like!

et puis je lui ai fait des coussins...

le tissu est moche, mais bon, il aime....

Mais avant de me mettre à coudre pour moi , j'ai rangé mon atelier, vissé des pots de confiture sous l'étagère pour ma collection de boutons qui ne cesse de s'agrandir.

But before starting my own sewing I have given  my workshop a good cleaning, and  screwed some jam pots under the shelve for my always-growing collection of buttons.

Mon chéri m'a fabriqué une étagère pour y mettre mes boîtes de ruban. Il s'est un peu planté et l'étagère est de guingois mais elle est mignonne quand même!

My chéri has made shelves for the ribbon boxes, a bit askew but nice anyway!

Puis je me suis fabriqué un coussin, la machine est plus haute que la Bernette et ma chaise était donc un peu basse. J'ai fait un appliqué en tissu épais à chaise  longue sur du lin. 

Avec le pied pour appliqué, je n'ai eu aucun problème !

Then I have made a pillow cover, the new machine is higher than the Bernette so my chair is too low. I have used very thick fabric for the applique on linen and  it has worked very smoothly with the applique foot!

En résumé, je suis très contente de ma nouvelle machine, j'ai beaucoup beaucoup aimé :

le pied transporteur,

le coupe fil automatique

la facilité d'accès aux points

et j'ai moins apprécié qu'il  n'y ai pas de capteur de canette, je me suis retrouvée à coudre dans le vide sans m'en apercevoir !

In a nutshell, I am very happy of my new sewing machine, I really appreciate

the walking foot, the automatic thread snip, the easy access to the various stitches

but I really miss the bobin captor, I was sewing with no more thread in the bobin!

Evidemment je suis très loin d'avoir fait le tour de la machine et je pense qu'il va me falloir un certain temps, mais je ne regrette pas mon achat.

Of course I am  very far of mastering the machine and I think it will take me a while but I am very happy with the choice of this model!
